Mikaal Abdulla: Building Financial Technology Across Markets
Mikaal Abdulla is a fintech entrepreneur and startup founder based in Hong Kong. His career encompasses technology consulting, institutional financial services, regional expansion, and early-stage company building across Asia Pacific, India, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States.
Mikaal Abdulla began his career in Deloitte’s technology consulting practice, advising digital banking, online brokerage, and e-commerce startups. That work provided a foundation in the infrastructure, regulation, and commercial requirements behind digital financial products.
He then joined E*TRADE, where he spent a decade leading expansion across 14 markets in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and India. The role required coordinating product, regulatory, operational, and commercial priorities across markets with different financial systems and consumer expectations.
Under Mikaal Abdulla’s leadership, the regional E*TRADE business reached $11 billion in assets under management, $200 million in revenue, and $60 million in profit. That institutional experience provided a direct understanding of what financial products require at scale, from regional infrastructure to disciplined execution.
Mikaal Abdulla later founded 8 Securities, which launched as Asia’s first mobile-only brokerage. The company introduced a series of product and operating precedents within Asian consumer financial services, including the region’s first robo-advisor, social trading platform, fractional shares offering, and subscription pricing model.
The subscription model applied a familiar fixed-price approach to financial services, while mobile delivery gave consumers a digital-first way to access brokerage products. The company also became the first licensed consumer financial services business in Asia to run fully in the cloud.
His product record includes the first stock trade executed end-to-end by an AI agent. Together, these developments reflect an approach centered on identifying practical consumer needs and selecting technology that fits the regulatory and commercial requirements of the market.
International experience is a defining part of Mikaal Abdulla’s professional perspective. He has lived and worked across Silicon Valley, New York, London, Dubai, Mumbai, Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok, and Hong Kong. Exposure to these markets informs how he evaluates product adoption, distribution, regulation, infrastructure, and organizational culture.
The same international scope is reflected in his education. Mikaal Abdulla holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and London Business School, connecting academic study in two financial centers with professional experience across several regions.
His work has received recognition through TechCrunch Disrupt, AWS Top 5 Startup in Asia, and the Asia Fintech 100. These distinctions accompany a career focused on building digital financial products, expanding regulated businesses, and introducing new consumer investment models within Asia.
Across consulting, enterprise expansion, and startup development, his work remains grounded in the operational details behind financial technology. Product design, regulatory context, market timing, and regional execution form the consistent threads across his professional experience.
